Summary¶
Practical comparison of two simple methods for starting new tomato plants from removed side growth.
Context¶
Cultivar: Pink Dream / Розова мечта.
Date: June 2026.
Conditions:
- 07:00;
- overcast;
- about 19°C.
Mother plant notes:
- plant height after support: about 65 cm;
- about 15-20% of leaf mass removed;
- two similar plant sections used;
- section length: about 10 cm.
Method A - Soil¶
One plant section was placed directly into soil immediately after removal.
About 7 cm was placed below soil level.
Upper leaves were kept.
Method B - Water¶
One plant section was placed in about 4 cm of water near an indoor window.
Observation Plan¶
Observation period: 14 days.
Tracked indicators:
- leaf condition;
- turgor;
- new growth;
- visible root development;
- final establishment.

Success Criteria¶
A method is recorded as successful if the plant stays stable, shows new growth and continues development after day 14.
Notes¶
Tomatoes can produce roots along buried stem sections. This makes removed side growth useful for practical comparison trials.
